Comparative Study for Play Characteristics of Elders in Urban and Rural Areas

Abstract

|
This study performed a comparative analysis about the content of elders’ play and characterized the traits of ‘well-playing elder’ to clarify the distinction of playfulness between urban and rural areas. Also, we surveyed the difference between physical and psychological changes after ‘well-playing’ which the urban and rural elders experienced. The subject of this study consists of the 100 persons who are older than 65 in the urban and rural areas. Interview was used as the method of study. The collected data was analyzed by content analysis. The urban elders preferred the physical activity and exercise. However, the rural elders preferred games, linguistic and artistic activities. The rural elders preferred the group activity such as ‘Hwatu’ and fun chatting. However, the urban elders preferred the individual activity such as reading and exercise. In the meaning of ‘well-playing elder’, the urban elders preferred the physical and characteristic traits and the rural elders preferred the emotional and social traits. In the physical and psychological changes after ‘well-playing’, however, vast majority of urban and rural elders positively responded except other minor opinions.
